About

When making this site, and paper, the hardest part of the process was finding information that was relevant to the White House during the War of 1812. But, through the use of various databases and backtracing research articles I was able to find numerous primary sources. From letters of the time, to architectural maps, all of which relevant to my topic.

The Library of Congress was my chief resource, as the majority of my visuals were from there. I also felt YouTube videos were a great way to incorporate new media into the process for secondary sources, one of which I used for my paper. I used the GMU Library databases for a number of my other sources, including "A Narrative Of The Campaigns Of The British Army At Washington And New Orleans, Under Generals Ross, Pakenham And Lambert, In The Years 1814 And 1815. By An Officer Who Served In The Expedition. G. R. Gleig." The remainder of my sources, like that of the Treaty of Ghent and the Inaugural speech I already knew about - it was simply a matter of finding a reputable source online of it.

I learned a great deal on how to use Omeka through all of this, while I still feel I have a long way to go. I also learned how to make a Google Map, a process that will definately come in handy down the road. I was surprised by how easy it was to simply draw and share that information. I also learned a great deal about copyright and how to cite my information. There is a lot that goes into it, and was rather challenging getting my head around how to cite all these various forms of media - when I am primarily focused on books and written sources in the past.
